19 June 2009 - 10:54Understanding Hard Drives
Anyone who is slightly familiar with computer should know what a hard drive is. At the very least, he should have heard about this part of the computer. In fact, anyone who owns a computer should know what a hard drive is, as it is often considered as one of the most important components of a PC, next to its CPU and memory. The capacity of the PC depends in part on the capacity of the hard drive—or the hard disk drive, as it is more properly called. The more reliable the PC’s hard drive is, the easier it will be for anyone to play games on the computer, or edit music or movies, or, simply put, to even use and operate the computer.
But what is exactly a hard drive, and what does it do? Why is it extremely important? And why should you be mindful of your hard drive’s capacity?
A hard drive is a non-volatile storage device. By a non-volatile storage device, this means it allows the computer to store data when not powered or when turned off. In contrast, the random access memory of a computer is a volatile storage system; when you turn the computer off, all the stored data will be erased. The hard disk works like a cassette tape, as it stores data through a magnetic storage system. To put it simply, it is the device in your PC that allows you to save data and keep programs even when you turn the system off.
The use of a hard drive, in essence, is no longer exclusive to PCs alone; today, practically any and every gadget has a hard drive. Mobile phones, cameras, personal assistants—they all have hard drives as it is necessary for these gadgets to store data. Laptops too, of course, have hard drives as a means of storage, but they are smaller both in form and capacity.
Today, the power of available hard drives has improved, and the options have also become varied and far greater than ever before. You can choose between an external hard drive and an internal hard drive, both of which have definite advantage and disadvantages. You can also choose between numerous hard drive capacities and speeds, all of which should correspond to your needs and, ultimately, your budget. And, more importantly, there are several hard drives with varied prices to choose from.
Needless to say, a hard drive is among the main components of a computer—the quality and capacity of the hard drive you will buy will determine the function of your PC. Luckily, you no longer have to make the price of the hard drive your only deciding factor as there are several options and venues from which you can buy cheap hard drives.
