10 September 2009 - 17:26The Computing Mouse Devices of Today
Anyone who has used a computer knows what a mouse is. In fact, even when computers have constantly evolved in more sophisticated devices, these mouse devices remain constant, at least in terms of use. In terms of technology, the mouse has evolved with the computer. While the earlier computer mouse is mechanical and uses rollers and a hard ball that detects the motion of the user to perform operations on the computer, today’s mouse devices are much more complex and efficient. Most—if not all—computer users are now using optical mouse devices as a replacement for these mechanical mouse. And the improvement it proves is marked and evident, making the use of the mouse today easier. The mouse today is also less prone to damage.
Basic optical mouse devices use photodiodes and light-emitting diode in able to detect the movement on the surface. With the mechanical mice, one has to move some parts of the mouse; with the optical mice, there is hardly any movement necessary. The old mechanical mouse can also be inconvenient since the hard ball collects lint and other forms of dirt that can hinder its movement. The hard ball, after all, has to move physically in order to register movement on the computer. Therefore, it is necessary to change a mouse after only a short period of time. This is not a problem with an optical mouse.
But the optical mouse advanced to the laser mouse. The laser mouse, instead of using the typical LED, uses an infrared laser diode. This allows the mouse to have a more superior tracking power compared to the optical mouse. In fact, the laser mouse has 20 times more tracking power as compared to even the best optical mouse. The laser mouse was first made available in 2004.
And there are even more innovations with the mouse. Now, optical mouse emits different colors, according to the diode used, with red being the cheapest and the most common. Mouse devices today are also designed to have power-saving features. For one, there are now wireless mouse devices that rely on their own power source. Others, on the hand, even forego the usual use of batteries as some mouse devices are rechargeable through the use of ports in some keyboards. When not in use, the mouse is placed on the port. The port can also serve as some sort of Bluetooth hub or USB port.
Surely, mouse devices today are now more efficient than ever. Gone are the days that computer users will have the most difficult time manipulating and moving the mouse due to the uncooperative hard ball and the rollers. These computing mouse devices are more efficient, more practical, and more economical.
