Choosing a hard drive, the price is perhaps your most basic consideration, the one factor that will determine whether or not you will buy a particular hard drive or not. This is understandable and, in some ways, acceptable, but you also have to realize that there are other factors that should affect your decision. Considering how you can easily buy cheap hard drives today, especially from reliable online stores, the price of the hard drive should be the least of your worries. Simply put, you need to know that things you should be looking for when choosing and buying a cheap hard drive. After all, they may be cheap, but their quality betrays their low prices.

One of the factors you need to consider when buying a hard drive is its rotation speed. The rational speed will determine the rate of data transfer or how fast the computer will be able to process the data or information. Many experts say that 7200rpm is standard and sufficient, although some may prefer faster hard drives. The faster hard drives have speeds of 10000rpm or higher.

Size, of course, is perhaps one of the more important aspects of a hard drive. Although you are aiming for a cheap hard drive, you must not settle for anything less than what you would require. A 120GB hard drive may be sufficient for many, especially for individuals who do not deal with large files, but it may not be enough for those who are not just casual computer users. Those who save large files—such as movies files for editing, numerous music files, tons of other data such as pictures, among others—or those who store data in bulk should get something larger. Those who use several programs may also want to go beyond the standard 120GB hard drive. The smaller size for a hard drive is 40GB (which is extremely basic, almost negligible, size), while the largest as of 2009 is 2 TB (or terabyte, which is equivalent to 1000 GB or gigabytes).

However, many sources say that hard drives with large size capacities are often easier to crash or crash only after a few years. Instead of depending on just one large hard drive, it may be best to get a few cheap hard drives so you’ll have backup storage while using a more stable system.

Portability and connectivity are two important but often neglected factors when choosing a cheap hard drive. If you intend to use your hard drive in several locations, you have to make sure your hard drive is shock-resistant. Meanwhile, your hard drive should be compatible with the connection method of your computer. Make sure you have the necessarily cables, if needed.
