11 May 2009 - 7:09Asus Eee PC 700 series and 900 series

Asus Eee PC is intended to be a netbook/subnotebook mini computer manufactured and develepod by motherboard giants Asustek and is a part of the Eee pc mini netbook family. It was originally introduced in 2007 and everyone’s first perception of it was that it was a combination of being super lightweight, relatively inexpensive that ran linux. Later models included windows XP as it’s primary operating system. These newer models also became slightly more expensive but are still considered to be very cheap to buy. The “Eee” in “Eee pc” is actually an abbreviation that stands for “Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play”.

The Eee 700 series

It was announced at computex taipei in 2007 that two eee models the 701 and the 1001 would be released. The 701 was released 16th october 07 and following that release three further models were released to the public. 300,000 units were sold in the year of 2007, and they intended to sell a cool several million in 2008. CPU manufacturer giant intel praised the Eee pc by describing it as being part of the “world ahead” marketing movement. It’s a goal to provide anyone around the world the ability to have their own personal computer.

Size and price of the device is much smaller than even those ultra mobile PCs. It is also said that the Asus Eee pc is kind of in competition with the XO-1 notebook made for the “One laptop per child” program. Asus demonstrated the Eee pc and the classmate pc at the intel dev forum in 2007. They listed the specs for four types of Eee pc. It was announced by Asus at the time that they would start prices for the Eee pc at $199 and other some what more superior models would range upto $399.

However, specs and price seemed to differ slightly from what Asus had originally announced in 2007. The actual price ended up being $245 instead of $199 and some of the specs were reduced such as the solid stat drive being cut by half from 4GB to 2GB, the camera was removed and the 512mb ram was reduced to 256mb. It’s also worth mentioning that since oct ’07 the official Asus website has over time revised the specifications. In some countries the names for the Eee pc models are known as the 8G, 4G, 2G surf and 4G surf where as in certain other countries the marketing names for the Eee pc are still known as 700 and 701 etc. Another example of this is the Eee pc that comes pr-installed with Microsoft windows XP that was released in january 2008. This model is named the 4G-X in japan.

Eee 900 Series

In hong kong on the 16th april, 08 and in the UK may 1st, 08 was the dates that the Eee 900 series was released. In the US this model was released on 12th may ’08 and in germany and austria it was launched on the 26th june ’08. This model is slightly larger than previous models. This particular model came with a multi touch pad which allowed for two finger scrolling and a zoom feature that is done by pinching the pad’s surface. This model came with either linux or windows xp depending on the market.

The Eee 900 was the name for the linux version and it comes with 16gb solid state drive and some actually had a further 4GB SSD installed making a total storage of 20GB. The ones contrary to this are known as the Eee 900 16G. For the windows xp version it’s called the Eee pc 900 Win which comes in two flavors also one having 12GB storage (4GB SSD + 8GB SSD) and the other with one SSD with a capacity of only 16GB. Windows versions of the 900 series are more expensive than the linux versions. A simple comparison of this can be seen by the fact that the linux 20G is the same price as the windows 12G and the 16G EEEs are also more expensive than linux versions.

Advantages to buying the windows version over the linux version aren’t that great either. It comes with microsoft works and windows live suite pre-installed and also has starsuite 8. Other than these extras the two versions of the 900 series are identical in terms of hardware specs. The specs being 1GB RAM, 8.9 inc LCD display with a 1.3 Mp webcam and a celeron CPU that runs at 900mhz
